Sanna Mun is an interdisciplinary artist based in Berlin known for her multifaceted sound, spanning from ambient to raw, classic techno. Her sense for organically evolving motifs drives both her productions and her compelling DJ sets and live performances. Sanna's approach to music is uniquely informed by her background in archaeology and esotericism, elements that intricately weave into her compositions and the conceptual framework of her label, Katabasis. Her inaugural releases on prominent platforms, including Ø [Phase]'s Modwerks label and Clone's Repetitive Rhythm Research imprint, have rapidly garnered international acclaim and support.
Sanna’s work draws parallels between modern club culture and primordial rituals and mythologies she remedially weaves into Katabasis. Initially conceived as a series of experimental events centered around live hardware performances in 2019, she unveiled the label with her 2022 debut EP Katabasis 001. Inspired by Pythagoras' Music of the Spheres, the opus was promptly endorsed by techno luminaries. Following this milestone, Sanna contributed a remix to Clone's Repetitive Rhythm Research imprint alongside Surgeon to reinterpret Mark Hawkins and D-Knox's "Basic Input Output." Her heavyweight sophomore EP Initiation, a nod to her past as a metal musician, ensued on Ø [Phase]'s Modwerks label to critical acclaim.
More recently, Sanna saw the release of her second EP on Katabasis in 2023 with effusive accolades. Themed around otherworldly concepts, the triptych of tracks embarks on an auditory exploration of Neoplatonism. In her latest work, Sanna experiments with her vocals, reciting from Dante’s eponymous poem in the dub-influenced single “Inferno.” Introducing French favorite Benales and rising Japanese artist Toru Katsuta to her label as remix artists, Katabasis is poised for further expansion. Central to her artistic endeavors are the frontiers of freedom and self-expression—and how these concepts can be reclaimed and embodied through music. Sanna’s musical odyssey personifies the archetypal katabasis with a resolute rhythm reverberating techno’s rebellious grassroots.
